NC ranks 16th in the nation for adult obesity. Poor eating habits and “couch potato” lifestyle used to be the main culprits for obesity. The new culprit is the American workplace. 120-140 calories lost per day continues to be reflected in rising rates of obesity. 80 percent of American jobs involve low physical demand sedentary work. Being sedentary contributes to obesity. BMI (Body Mass Index) looks at fat based on height and weight. 18.5 to 24.9 is healthy; 25 to 29.9 is overweight; 30-39 is obese; more than 40 is than ideal weight.
Better marker than BMI is waist size
Waist circumference (WC) is an indicator of health risk associated with excess fat around the waist. WC of more than 40 inches in men, or more than 35 inches in women, is associated with health problems. For example: type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, thyroid disorders, hormonal and nutritional deﬁ cits, etc. can be caused by obesity.

You must eat to maintain an appropriate metabolism. We do baseline blood work to assess inhibitors to health goals. We review results, current eating patterns, sleep, stressors, personal and family history, and level of movement.

Take the steps instead of the elevator or escalator. Talk to your employer about a sit stand station or a treadmill desk. Purposefully use your staircase(s) at home. Walk outdoors in safe areas.
